Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Media regulatory bodies play an essential role in maintaining standards, protecting public interests, and ensuring accountability in journalism. In Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) oversee media practices to promote ethical standards and prevent abuses (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these bodies is often questioned due to inadequate funding, political interference, and limited enforcement capacity (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). Regulatory bodies are expected to balance press freedom with accountability, but in practice, challenges such as corruption and lack of transparency hinder their operations (Garba, 2024). This study examines the effectiveness of media regulatory bodies in Gombe, highlighting their successes, limitations, and areas for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the presence of media regulatory bodies in Gombe, their effectiveness in ensuring ethical compliance and accountability remains a concern. Issues such as weak enforcement mechanisms, political influence, and insufficient resources compromise their ability to fulfill their mandates (Olawale & Sani, 2023). These challenges contribute to unethical practices in the media, including sensationalism, misinformation, and lack of accountability. This study seeks to explore the factors affecting the effectiveness of media regulatory bodies in Gombe and recommend strategies to enhance their performance.
